The Wyoming city of Gillette is located in Campbell County and has a population of approximately 33,000 residents. Although Gillette was founded in 1891, prior to this it was known as Donkey Town due to its proximity to Donkey Creek, and later became Rocky Pile. It is best known for supplying the state with coal, but is also known as the home of Energy Downs racetrack. The 5 furlong oval dirt track hosts 9 days of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing annually spread throughout June, with the capacity to seat 3000 in its main grandstand. Energy Downs enjoys a rich racing history, although racing lapsed in 1996 before being relaunched on Friday 25th September 2015 after that 19 year break.
